Charles draws his imagery from the world of nature and life experience. The fusion of man and nature is a predominant theme in Strain’s sculpture. The aesthetic lines of the human figure and the celebration of human emotion are vehicles he uses as subject matter in this composition. Happiness, sadness, a moment in time, a familiar experience, a celebration, are some of the experiences that can be found when viewing his sculpture.
Charles studied art at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri, and also in Florence, Italy, with Studio Art Centers International. However, his formal education was not the beginning of seeing with an artist’s eye. Charles had the opportunity to travel widely with his family through his father’s work in the U.S . Navy. From these travels he experienced diverse people and cultures. These varied adventures as the youngest of four children have brought vision to his creative process.
Charles has been creating bronze sculptures for over 30 years and has created over 100 individual designs with each design being made in several sizes, from a few inches tall to monumental. Some designs will never be shown again. Each sculpture series is limited which many have already sold-out.
The sculpture creation process starts with an idea that Charles has and then translates into a bronze sculptural abstraction. His goal is to communicate his idea through the eyes of a sculptor and create sculpture to last a lifetime.
